November 7, 2011 by John Napoletano

Domain name sales transactions are categorized each quarter by Sedo. Sedo is one of the largest domain name market places in the world. When Sedo publishes something like the quarterly Domain Market Study it's worth taking the time to read what they have to say. The latest of which is titled Domain Market Study 3rd Quarter 2011 released just a few days ago.

I created a simple table below to help reveal any trends in domain name sales quarter to quarter, year over year. "Software" continues to rank as the top domain name category. "Religion and Spirituality" follows in 2nd place. "Employment" and "Regions, Countries, Cities" are flip flopping around in 3rd place.

Top 10 Domain Name Categories By Quarter

Dropping off the Top 10 Domain Name Categories list this year are "Jewelry" and "Hardware". Added to the Top 10 Domain Name Categories list this year are "Insurance" and "News and Media". Keep in mind that this is the Top 10 list. Dropping off the list doesn't mean the category is no longer attractive to investors.

Why is this information important? Eventually someone is going to ask you or me for advice on what kind of website to develop, what domain name to buy. Top 10 Domain Name Categories give you a glimpse at where the most buy and sell activity is occurring. You can buy or build the best website in the world. But if the domain name category is not active, you may be waiting a long time to sell.
